In the past few years one of the big Christmas sellers has been headphones, and brands like Beats, Bose, Sennheiser and Skullcandy have made over the ear headphones very popular. Over the ear headphones have been around for years and I can remember as a child listening to music on my father’s ghetto blaster and 8 track player via over the headphones, but as I grew older I never liked using them with any of my Walkman’s or iPod’s as I felt they weren’t really portable.
My views recently changed when I was given some Even H2 headphones to try from the Israeli audio startup Even, founded in 2014. Even’s USP is designing headphones that are tailored to your hearing via their Even EarPrint technology which they call glasses for your ears, and I will talk about this later.
Earlier in the year I upgraded my iPhone 6 to an iPhone 7and since the iPhone 7, Apple have removed the headphone socket, which means you have to use the adaptor that comes with your phone, Apple’s earpod’s or Bluetooth headphones. As the Even H2 headphones use Bluetooth, I could test them with my iPhone 7. If you have an Android phone and tablet the Even H2’s works perfectly with them too.
When you open the box that the headphones come in you can see the beautiful storage case that you keep the headphones in.
Once you open the storage case you can see the real beauty of the headphones, which are made from premium materials including sustainable solid walnut wood and hand-polished die-cast metal.
On the right-hand side of the headphones you will notice various buttons and they have various functions such as volume up, volume down, play, and the most important button, the power on button which is used to setup and also turn on Even EarPrint.
When you first turn on the headphones you are greeted by Sarah, the built-in calibration software, who will guide you through the setup process which takes around 90 seconds. Sarah takes readings for each of your ears based on your responses to test-tones for each ear. Once you have setup EarPrint you can download the Even EarPrint app which allows you to set, store and manage your Ear Prints, see a visualisation of your Ear Print and learn more about how you hear.
The H2’s also has a built-in microphone which allows you to receive and make phone calls, and the sound quality is superb with no distortion or echo. The sound quality of music is fantastic and even better when you turn on EarPrint. with songs sounding more clearer and very intimate. As the headphones fit snugly around your ears they act like noise cancelling headphones and don’t have too much outside interference.
The battery life on Even H2’s is an amazing 20 hours and it only takes 52 minutes to recharge them. You can also plug the headphones into your iPod, MP3 player or phone if the battery needs to be recharged and you are not able to recharge them.
At the moment, you can only buy the H2’s from various suppliers in the UK including Amazon for £229 around €260 which is a great price for premium headphones. The main selling point of the H2’s is creating your own personalised listening profile and while this may sound like a gimmick, it actually works and it may force competitors to start offering something similar as I think this could be the future of personal audio. So, if you are looking to buy premium headphones as a Christmas gift or for yourself then I can highly recommend the Even H2’s which have changed my views on over the ear headphones.
