On Friday, Donald Trump threatened to cut off aid to countries that allow drugs into the United States during a visit to the Customs and Border Protection National Training Center in Virginia.
In a statement, Trump specifically called out El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico in his criticism of countries whose citizens are coming into the United States illegally.
I want to stop the aid. If they can’t stop drugs from coming in, ’cause they can stop them a lot easier than us. They say, ‘oh we can’t control it.’ Oh great, we’re supposed to control it.”
“So we give them billions and billions of dollars, and they don’t do what they’re supposed to be doing, and they know that. But we’re going to take a very harsh action.”
These countries are not our friends, you know. We think they’re our friends, and we send them massive aid, and I won’t mention names right now.”
“But I look at these countries, I look at the numbers we send them, we send them massive aid and they’re pouring drugs into our country and they’re laughing at us”
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is currently in Latin America attempting to mend relations with our allies. Instead of finding ways to improve our status with countries in the south, Trump’s administration is now forced to clean up the mess Trump made; the so-called leader of the free world couldn’t have picked a more inconvenient time to start his series of attacks.
A senior State Department official who was reportedly traveling with Tillerson, mentioned that “the president’s comments were not helpful,” signaling that Tillerson may have thought the same.
Trump’s war on Latino immigrants has gone on way too long. The racist-in-chief has put all immigrants into one category and the truth of the matter is not all immigrants are drug dealers, rapists, or any other foul remark Trump has made towards them. Most, if not all, immigrants are coming here to find work and to provide a better life for their families. Trump doesn’t understand the economics of immigration; the United States is facing an aging population and a lack of skilled workers and Trump’s immigration polices are only making things worse. It appears as though his administration is finally noticing that as well.
