Shinya Takahashi recently hinted at some new Nintendo hardware in development.

During the BAFTAs, Shinya Takahashi was briefly interviewed and he talked a bit about Nintendo having some new hardware on the way.

In a quick interview with the BBC, Takahashi had this to say about forthcoming hardware from Nintendo.

Nintendo constantly works on hardware, so we have been doing research and development. So you may see the new system sometime in the future.

To be fair, this should come as no real surprise as Nintendo is always developing new hardware but the timing is noteworthy as the Switch was only released a year ago.

What’s also worth realizing here is that Takahashi is the General Manager of Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development Division, so the fact that he is talking about new hardware here means that this is not a throwaway comment.

After all, he is specifically referencing a new system in the future not long after the release of the Switch. My guess is that this more of a modified and updated Switch rather than an all-new console.

What’s more, Takahashi’s comment is specifically about a new system, so this rules out something like a peripheral release or anything else to accompany the already released Switch.

Whatever is planned from Nintendo when it comes to new hardware, they need to be careful not to undermine the burgeoning install base of the Switch. Releasing a new console now to replace the Switch would be devastating and undo all the work of the past year.
