“She went through a little rough patch, but she’s doing great,” Trump told officials, as his wife, seated next to him, looked on.

“We’re very proud of her. She’s done a fantastic job as first lady. The people love you,” Trump added, saying directly to her, “The people of our country love you.”

Sporting a tan trench coat, the 46-year-old former model smiled but did not make any remarks in her first appearance in front of the news media in weeks.

Her presence at the briefing comes after she underwent a May 14 embolization procedure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to “treat a benign kidney condition,” according to the White House.

While it was her first time in front of cameras following the nearly weeklong hospital stay, Trump had attended a Monday reception at the White House for military families, her first such event following a more than 20-day absence from the public eye.

Earlier on Wednesday, the president ripped the press for what he called “vicious” and “unfair” coverage of his wife.

The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!

…Four reporters spotted Melania in the White House last week walking merrily along to a meeting. They never reported the sighting because it would hurt the sick narrative that she was living in a different part of the world, was really ill, or whatever. Fake News is really bad!
