Ever since its debut last March, Nintendo Switch has been a haven for games developed by smaller, independent studios. Numerous indie titles have far outperformed expectations on Nintendo’s hybrid console, including , , and Celeste. Switch eShop is already home to numerous great indie games, but that’s just the beginning.
Nintendo recently held its annual shareholders meeting, and investors asked about the company’s strategy for dealing with indie games going forward. In response, Senior Executive Officer Susumu Tanaka indicated that Nintendo is planning to ramp up their indie support even further going forward.
“We started working with indie developers during the Wii U generation. For Nintendo Switch, we set up a development environment that supports Unity middleware, which is used on smartphones and other platforms. We are also actively engaging with indie developers at video game-focused shows and other events in different regions. We also had a Nintendo booth at the BitSummit indie game event held in Kyoto, where we showcased some games. Some of the indie games already released have gone on to become million sellers worldwide. In the future, we are looking to release around 20 to 30 indie games on Nintendo Switch per week, and we definitely expect to see some great games among them.” — Susumu Tanaka
Nintendo is aiming to work with developers to bring 20 to 30 indie games to Switch every week. That means we could see as many as 1,500 indie titles release on the console in a single year! If Nintendo actually hits that ambitious goal, they’ll have an incredibly robust lineup. Hopefully they’ll continue to find better ways to organize and display content so that great games aren’t lost in the avalanche of new releases each week.
